The PDP state secretary, Mr Hilary Otsu in a statement affirmed that such endorsements aimed to question the credibility of a process that has just begun and as such urged party members everywhere to ignore the endorsement.

Mr. Otsu said:

“Our attention has been drawn to a Press Release by a segment of a Senatorial Zone, indicating the endorsement of Dr Asue Ighodalo as a Governorship Candidate. The unwarranted Press Release has already began to raise questions with regards to the credibility of the nomination process which the party has just kickstarted.

“As a result of incessant calls, we are advising all Party members/faithful to disregard totally, this press release/Adoption Statement. The process of nomination for an Edo PDP governorship candidate has started and will be followed through to its completion.

We hereby warn mischief-makers and political traders to desist from any acts that will hinder this process. Our goal is to ensure a smooth and credible process, acceptable to all aspirants.

“Goodluck to all aspirants.”

Wike Sites Judges’ Quarters On Bayelsa’s Demolished Buildings https://afemaireporters.com.ng/wike-sites-judges-quarters-on-bayelsas-demolished-buildings/ https://afemaireporters.com.ng/wike-sites-judges-quarters-on-bayelsas-demolished-buildings/#respond Mon, 22 May 2023 19:25:24 +0000 https://afemaireporters.com.ng/?p=157962 Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike has kicked off the construction of seven units of five-bedroom buildings for judges of Rivers State judiciary at the Akasa Street Old GRA where his administration recently demolished flats initially belonging to Bayelsa State.
The Governor, however, said nothing had strained the relationship between Rivers and Bayelsa.

Performing the kick-off on Monday, Wike explained that with the dilapidated property owned by the Bayelsa State Government demolished, his administration considered it appropriate to develop its residential quarters for judges.

Wike explained that the project was implemented under his administration’s urban renewal programme to rid the area of criminal elements, who used once abandoned Bayelsa property as a hideout.

He said: “This is the second phase of residence of judges of the Rivers State judiciary. It is important to let the public know where we are. This place used to be Bayelsa State government property when it was created out of Rivers State.

“As part of urban renewal, we gave the whole of Old GRA to Julius Berger Nigeria PLC to do all the roads and drainages.”

Wike recalled that in August 2021, he wrote to Bayelsa Governor, Douye Diri to inform him about the dilapidated nature of the property and that they served as a hideout for suspected criminals.

The engagement between them, he said, continued without yielding the expected responses and his administration was compelled to acquire the property under public policy.

He said: “Even when we attended our Governors meeting, I called his attention to it, saying there is no way we can allow this kind of property to be here.

“It is either you renovate it, which will not cost more than two or three hundred million or you sell it to the Rivers State government to be able to rebuild the place, so that we know those who are staying here. In 2022, I reminded him again.”

Wike said it became impossible to allow the dilapidated property to remain, so it was destroyed to ensure that the intended clean and safe environment was achieved.

He said: “And to tell Bayélsa people, I have nothing against Bayelsa State or Bayelsa people. But every government must be serious and show leadership.”

Wike emphasised that it was because of the existing cordial relationship that his administration embarked on building hostels and auditoriums at the Yenagoa campus of the Nigerian Law School.

He said: “Nobody forced me to go and intervene when intervened in school (in Yenagoa). I spent not less than N5.3B. If we have anything against Bayelsa State, we would not have even tried to help in rebuilding the law school.

“When Bayelsa State government was inaugurating their Medical University, Rivers State government was invited, on that Saturday, I was there and Rivers State government donated N500m.

“And on Monday the Bayelsa State government acknowledged receipt of the money. We are playing brotherly and sisterly role which is what it is supposed to be.”

”We kept negotiating with the members and they were not forthcoming with our demands.

”They insisted on talking with the victim before the payment of the ransom. I think they were suspicious that he might have died in our custody. But we lied to them that there was no network where he was kept and that we travelled to where there was a network to talk with them.

Tinubu’s Aide Under Fire Over Petition Against Datti https://afemaireporters.com.ng/tinubus-aide-under-fire-over-petition-against-datti/ https://afemaireporters.com.ng/tinubus-aide-under-fire-over-petition-against-datti/#respond Sun, 02 Apr 2023 06:19:22 +0000 https://afemaireporters.com.ng/?p=149570 The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) Director of Media and Publicity, Bayo Onanuga, has come under severe criticism from his “friend”, Richard Akinnola.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Onanuga had on Thursday signed a petition asking the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to sanction Channels Television for allegedly breaching the Nigerian Broadcasting Code during an interview with the Vice-Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Datti Baba Ahmed.

Baba-Ahmed in the interview had faulted the emergence of the former Lagos governor as the president-elect and asked the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Kayode Ariwoola, not to swear him in on May 29.

Tinubu, Onanuga and supporters of the APC accused the Labour Party Vice presidential candidate of making several comments in the Channels TV interview that attacked the integrity of the 25th February 2023 presidential elections.

Taking action on Tinubu camp’s petition, the NBC on Friday fined Channels TV N5 million.

Reacting to the development, Akinnola said his “friend” was intolerant and has authoritarian tendencies.

Below is the full content of his open letter:

My dear Bayo,
I hope you are now happy and satisfied, that the National Broadcasting Commission(NBC) has sanctioned CHANNELS with a N5 million fine, following your petition over the Datti Ahmed’s interview on CHANNELS.

Chief Gani Fawehinmi and Dr Olu Onagoruwa ( both of blessed memories) were the best of friends for several years but that friendship was truncated when the latter decided to join the Abacha junta as the Attorney-General, churning out despicable Decrees. Their relationship ended and Gani publicly upbraided his erstwhile friend.

You and l have been friends for several years, fought many battles together against the military, particularly against their onslaught on the free press. I therefore feel terribly pained that l have to publicly upbraid you for your recent public statements, particularly your petition against CHANNELS tv, to the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC). Et tu, Bayo? I’m still trying to wrap my heads round your sudden 360 degrees against all you fought for under the military. You are yet to be in government and you have started exhibiting intolerance against the independent media, the same thing you fought for all your years, like Dr Onagoruwa did. I’m sure your principal, who has been a lover of free press, would be embarrassed by your position.

I watched the interview under reference and l must say, you are VERY UNFAIR to Seun Okinbaloye, the anchor man who repeatedly cautioned Datti Ahmed for making some seemingly inciting comments, to the anger and discomfiture of Datti Ahmed. So, in all conscience, what then is the basis of your petition to the NBC? Can you compare that to your recent incendiary post against an ethnic group? Why are you making enemies for your principal, instead of friends, in a country so polarized? While your principal is preaching unity and healing, you are busy trying to make more enemies for him. Yesterday, it was ARISE, today, it is CHANNELS. Is that a foretaste of what to experience in the incoming government? So, we should be fixated on NTA and TVC, isn’t that what you are trying to tell proverbially? To say that I’m totally embarrassed by your silly conduct, would be stating it mildly.

For eight years, despite all vitriolic attacks on the president, Femi Adesina, as Special Adviser, Media to the president, did not petition against any medium but you wey never enter, don dey censor the media. What a shame! I can expect the disaster that awaits us if you become the presidential spokesperson. Do l subscribe to unfettered press freedom? No. I believe every freedom comes with responsibility. However, when you create a perception that the incoming government would be intolerant of the free press, we need to sound the alarm bell.

My dear Bayo, it is often said that until a man tastes power or has access to money, you can’t judge his character. That may not be totally true because one of our mutual friends, Tunji Bello, has tasted both but has been his normal self that l have known for over three decades. His decent character has not changed, in and out of government. So, could it be that your real character is just unfolding? Just because you are now at the periphery of power, you are ready to obliterate all the values and principles you held all these years. What a shame!

TAKE NOTICE that we would fight this your planned “insurrection” against the independent media the way we, including you, fought Abacha’s dictatorship against the media.

RICHARD AKINNOLA

Postscriptum: Before l wrote this open letter, l had informed some of our mutual friends, so that they won’t feel embarrassed.

Fresh Trouble For Atiku As Two PDP Governors Set To Dump Him Days To 2023 Election https://afemaireporters.com.ng/fresh-trouble-for-atiku-as-two-pdp-governors-set-to-dump-him-days-to-2023-election/ https://afemaireporters.com.ng/fresh-trouble-for-atiku-as-two-pdp-governors-set-to-dump-him-days-to-2023-election/#respond Thu, 02 Feb 2023 10:18:55 +0000 https://afemaireporters.com.ng/?p=143258 Two strong Governors are reportedly set to dump the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar just a few days before the February 25 election.

The two Governors are different from the G5 Governors who have already declared they are not working for Atiku’s ambition except the PDP National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu resigns and is replaced by a southerner.

This development was made known by the national chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Professor Rufai Ahmed Alkali, while addressing newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday, January 31.

Alkali made the revelation while reacting to Atiku’s claims that he was in talks with the NNPP presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso for support during the forthcoming election.

The NNPP Chairman told Atiku to put his house in order and stop dreaming that Kwankwaso would step down for him.

Categorically, Alkali stated that Kwankwaso was not in any discussion for an alliance with Atiku.

“Five governors are not with Atiku. These governors are coming from powerful states. The two others have been sending messages that they will not support Atiku.

“We thought that anyone contesting an election should put his house together. We left the PDP because we knew it would implode. It is not the same party as yesterday. In the next one week, some will leave the PDP,” Alkali said.

Wike warned that he would not allow Momodu to use him to gain relevance.

Momodu, who is the Director of Strategic Communications of PDP’s Presidential Campaign Council, had warned Wike against crossing the line by maligning the party’s flagbearer, Atiku Abubakar.

He had urged the governor not to turn the fight for justice and equity into a personal vendetta.

Reacting, Wike berated the veteran journalist for opting to be a presidential spokesman after contesting to be the party’s flagbearer.
